Gastroscope Clinic at WIld West + Way Out West
Join Phoenix Equine Veterinary Services at our gastroscope clinic at Wild West + Way Out West. We will be offering gastroscopes and ulcer treatment. Call us to schedule at (480)621-9293 and come find us on site at Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre on Feb 27.
Gastroscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing gastric ulcers in horses. Using a flexible camera, we can directly visualize the stomach to identify ulcers, inflammation, and other abnormalities—helping guide the most effective treatment plan.
Preparation is key for accurate results:
• No feed for 12 hours prior to the procedure
• Water is allowed until 4 hours before scoping
Early diagnosis means better comfort, performance, and overall health for your horse.
Equine gastric ulcers can affect horses of all disciplines and ages. Clinical signs can be subtle and vary from horse to horse. Common symptoms include:
• Changes in attitude or behavior (irritability, girthiness, sensitivity to brushing)
• Poor performance or unwillingness to work forward
• Decreased appetite or picky eating
• Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition
• Recurrent mild colic or signs of abdominal discomfort
• Dull hair coat or poor topline
• Resistance to saddling, mounting, or leg pressure
• Teeth grinding or excessive salivation
• Lying down more frequently or acting uncomfortable after meals
Some horses with ulcers may show no obvious signs, which is why gastroscopy is the only definitive way to diagnose gastric ulcers.
